Extensions, Conversions and New Homes in Wantage

Local Architectural Design Studio

Philip Wadge Architecture works with homeowners across Wantage, Grove and the Vale of White Horse to reimagine their properties through modern extensions, renovations, barn conversions and new homes. From Georgian townhouses near the Market Place to the brick, flint and thatch of Harwell, Chilton and Blewbury, every project is shaped by its local landscape.

See It Before It's Built

Founder Philip Wadge reads each property and its setting closely, listens to how you want to live, and helps you see what your home could become. From there, our team develops the design in 3D, so you can test how a space feels long before a wall goes up.

Virtual reality walkthroughs let you experience the proportions and the light for yourself. The same models show planning officers how the design will sit in its setting, and are used during the construction phase.

Transform Your Home

The Vale of White Horse Landscape

Homes around Wantage often sit on generous plots with long views south to the chalk downs. The Vale is a broad, low plain to the North of the Ridgeway and The White Horse. Below it are the villages of Letcombe Regis, Childrey, Sparsholt and the Challows, among streams and paddocks. Whether a traditional village cottage or a more modern family home, the landscape plays an important role in making homes in the Wantage area special.

Home and Garden, Connected

Our designs strengthen the connection between house and garden: framing the landscape, drawing daylight deep into the home, and opening up living spaces to enjoy outdoor living. Reworking the layout and the glazing turns a house that ignored its view into one built around it.

Wantage Planning Expertise

We have secured over 500 planning approvals across 24 local authorities in the region. The Wantage area falls under Vale of White Horse District Council, which works in partnership with South Oxfordshire District Council on shared planning services and a joint local plan.

The Wantage Neighbourhood Plan, made in May 2025, carries full weight, so proposals within the parish are assessed against it directly.

Designing Within The North Wessex Downs

The North Wessex Downs National Landscape covers much of the country south of Wantage, where proposals must respond carefully to landscape character, local materials and visual impact. Parts of central Wantage also fall within a conservation area, with listed buildings throughout the town and the surrounding villages of Ardington, Lockinge and the Hendreds.

Unlock Your Home's Potential

Wantage and Oxfordshire Projects:

Start With A Conversation

The best place to begin is a conversation about your home. During a focused 90-minute consultation, Philip will visit your property, look closely at how it works today, and explore the real opportunities for light, space and connection to the garden. You will come away with clear, practical advice and a much better sense of what is possible.

From there we move through design options, digital survey, design development, planning, construction drawings, tendering and support on site. You will always know what is happening next.
