Extensions & New Homes in Berkshire

Berkshire Architectural Design Studio

PWA is a small, family-run design studio based in Newbury, in the heart of West Berkshire.

Founder Philip Wadge and his team design extensions, renovations, conversions and new homes across Berkshire from Thames-side properties and rural farmhouses to village settings and the open countryside of the North Wessex Downs National Landscape.

Designed Around How You Live

Every project starts the same way: Philip reads the property and its setting, listens to how you want to live, and begins to see what's possible. That understanding shapes everything that follows.

We bring 3D visualisation into the process early so you can see your home before it's built, and sustainable design thinking from the first sketch so it feels right in every season.

Homes Shaped by Berkshire's Landscape

Berkshire properties come in every form from period cottages, Victorian and Edwardian houses, mid-century homes, detached family properties and rural farmsteads, but they often share something in common: generous plots, mature gardens and a strong connection to the surrounding countryside.

Home and Garden, Designed Together

The relationship between inside and out sits at the centre of every project: framing views, drawing in daylight, and opening living spaces to the garden so that house and landscape work together. Whether that means a contemporary glazed extension on a period farmhouse or reimagining a tired bungalow around its south-facing garden, the result is a home that feels part of where it is.

Berkshire Planning Expertise

Based in West Berkshire, we have secured over 500 planning approvals across 24 local authorities. We know how to shape designs that are ambitious yet deliverable, and how to guide you through the process with clear, strategic advice.

In Berkshire, we work regularly with West Berkshire Council, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Reading Borough Council and Wokingham Borough Council.

Designing in the North Wessex Downs

The North Wessex Downs National Landscape (formerly AONB) is a key local designation where proposals must respond carefully to landscape character, scale and visual impact. We have extensive experience designing within the National Landscape, delivering contemporary homes that satisfy planners while giving our clients the light, space and garden connection they want.

We work in and around Newbury, Hungerford, Thatcham, Pangbourne, Cold Ash, Theale, Ascot, Windsor, Maidenhead and surrounding villages.

Berkshire Projects:

Start With a Conversation

The best place to begin is a conversation about your home. During a focused 90-minute consultation, Philip will visit your property, look closely at how it works today, and explore the real opportunities for light, space and connection to the garden. You'll come away with clear, practical advice and a much better sense of what's possible.

To see how we work from first conversation to finished home, visit Our Process.
