Where The Chilterns Meet the Downs

The Goring Gap is where the Thames narrows between chalk hills. Goring sits on the Oxfordshire bank in the Chilterns National Landscape, opposite Streatley beneath the North Wessex Downs. The Ridgeway and Thames Path meet here before the river flows south past Gatehampton and Basildon parkland to Pangbourne, where the Pang joins the Thames by the Whitchurch toll bridge. Gardens range from riverside lawns to hillside terraces and woodland clearings around Goring Heath and Woodcote.

Planning Across Two Counties

We have obtained more than 500 planning approvals from 24 local authorities on both sides of the Thames. Goring, South Stoke, Woodcote, and Whitchurch-on-Thames fall under South Oxfordshire District Council, while Pangbourne, Streatley, Tidmarsh, and the Basildons are governed by West Berkshire Council. The Goring Neighbourhood Plan, established in July 2019, has full authority over parish decisions, and we consider its policies from the initial design stages.

Two National Landscapes, One River

Few places lie between two protected landscapes: the Chilterns National Landscape reaches Goring, while the North Wessex Downs rise opposite. Proposals consider landscape character, local materials such as flint, brick, and clay tiles, and valley views. Conservation areas include the historic centres of Goring and Pangbourne, with listed buildings and riverside plots requiring flood risk assessments. These settings are ideal for thoughtful design and showcase our best work.

During a focused 90-minute consultation, Philip will visit your property, examine how it works today, and explore the real opportunities for light, space and connection with the garden. You will come away with clear, practical advice and a much better sense of what is possible.

From there, we move through design options, a digital survey, design development, planning, construction drawings, tendering, and on-site support. You will always know what is coming next.
