Home Extensions, Renovations and New Builds in Winchester

Philip Wadge Architecture is a small, family-run architectural design studio serving homeowners in Winchester and the surrounding villages, from Kings Worthy, Sparsholt and Crawley in the north to Twyford, Compton and Shawford in the south, and from Stockbridge to New Alresford.

Homes range from Georgian townhouses near the cathedral to thatched cottages, converted barns and generous family houses on village lanes. We design extensions, renovations and new builds, shaped by light, space and the garden.

Winchester lies in the valley of the Itchen, a chalk stream that runs clear past the cathedral. The South Downs Way sets off from the City Mill. Upstream, the river threads through Easton, Avington and Itchen Abbas, between watercress beds and water meadows, while the downland rises westward beyond Littleton. The Dever valley opens northwards around Sutton Scotney and Micheldever.

We have secured more than 500 planning approvals across 24 local authorities over the past eight years. Winchester City Council decides on applications across the city and in villages such as South Wonston and Stoke Charity, in line with the Winchester District Local Plan 2040, adopted in March 2026.

In Twyford, the neighbourhood policies adopted in 2022 carry full weight, so we design to them from the first sketch. East of the city, the South Downs National Park Authority covers Martyr Worthy, Itchen Stoke and Ovington, where landscape character shapes every decision.
